January Meeting

Happy New Year! While we typically meet on the first Wednesday of the month, because this January, it falls on New Year’s Day, our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 8, 2020, at 7:30 pm, at St Theresa, the Little Flower Church, 15 Still River Road, Harvard, MA. Please note the time change!

Since it’s a new year, it’s a great time to learn some new knitting skills, or reinforce some rusty ones! We found a clever little knitted bag pattern called the “Windmill Bag“ that involves doing an I-cord, an I-cord bind off, picking up stitches (remember that from the mitered squares?), and seaming. The pattern’s writer used Lily Sugar’n Cream cotton yarn; however, you can use any worsted weight yarn that you desire. She knitted 4 rectangles using 3 colors of the regular sized balls, striping the fourth rectangle with the leftovers of the 3 colors. If striping isn’t your thing, you could use 4 different colors, one for each rectangle. The choice is yours! Other supplies needed are size 6 needles straight or circular to knit flat, size 6 dpn’s, a split ring stitch marker or safety pin, and a tapestry needle or crochet hook for seaming. Please note that Joann Fabrics sells the Lily Sugar’n Cream Super Size balls, while Michael’s sells the regular size balls, which is really all you need. Not sure what Walmart sells.

If you do not want to make the bag, you can knit a small sample to practice the techniques on. Either way, there is a little homework to be done prior to our meeting. If you are interested in making the bag, please follow the pattern to knit one full rectangle. If you only want to practice, then all you need to do is follow the pattern, but can cast on 10 stitches and only knit 30-50 rows instead of 100. Please let me know if you have any questions.

As always, we look forward to seeing your completed items or interesting work in progress for “show and tell”.

Membership is $25 a year. Guests are welcome to attend the program for a $10 charge.
